HYUNDAI GROUP TOPS J.D. POWER IQS FOR THE FIRST TIME Published - 10/11/2014

At the conclusion of this year’s J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, the Hyundai group topped the rankings for the first time, leading the U.S motor industry in five segments.

The combination of the Hyundai brand’s fourth place score and Kia’s seventh place score put the Korean manufacturer at the top of the list in 2014.

Quality scores are determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles, where lower scores will indicate higher quality.

The study is based on feedback from more than 86,000 buyers and lessees of new 2014 model year vehicles after 90 days of ownership and was conducted from February to May of this year.

Hyundai improved its points by 12, climbing to 94, while Kia held steady at 106, still 10 points better than the industry standard. The Hyundai Accent, Elantra and Genesis all nabbed segment wins this year.

“Receiving IQS awards in multiple vehicle segments acknowledges Hyundai’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction across our entire product lineup, not just our luxury vehicles,” said Dave Zuchowski, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, in a statement.

There was a slight increase in the industry average of problems per vehicles - from 13/100 vehicles in 2013 to 116/100 in 2014. The study attributes this to technological issues such as bluetooth pairing, voice recognition and audio system functioning.

David Sargent, vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power, told Automotive News in an interview that he expects the figures to stabilise once the front-runners have established a set of trends going forward and “coming behind them are lots of other manufacturers who are now introducing similar type of technology. Once we get through that first round, I suspect that we’ll see some improvement. Maybe three to four years before we start to see some improvement.”
