Hyundai Motor Groups Appoints Albert Biermann Published - 22/01/2015

Albert Biermann has been appointed the new head of Vehicle Test & High-Performance Development at the Hyundai Motor Group. As the former vice president at BMW M Automobiles, Biermann will play an integral role in accelerating the roll-out of new high-performance vehicles and technologies in a drive to develop the dynamic capabilities of Hyundai and Kia models.

His appointment is in line with the Korean automotive group’s move towards becoming a technical leader in ride and handling through the production of vehicles that lead their respective segments in driver engagement.

"This is a senior engineering appointment and an important part of our effort to further optimize the dynamics of our vehicles, providing even greater rewards for keen drivers, says vice chairman of the Hyundai Motor Company and head of the Hyundai-Kia Research & Development Centre, Woong Chul Yang.

Apart from ushering in a new line of all-new models, Biermann’s role will extend to the overseeing of engineering projects related to ride and handling, safety, reliability and the mitigation of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Biermann’s appointment will also have a major impact on Hyundai Motor’s involvement in the World Rally Championship (WRC) as performance technologies and insights between the engineering programmes for road and rally cars begin to intersect more effectively.

According to Woong Chul Yang, "Mr. Biermann has unrivalled credentials in this field. His expertise and experience will help us accelerate the development of all-new models that are great to drive, while facilitating the transfer of knowledge between our road-car and motorsport engineering teams."

Biermann’s 30 years of experience in the field, includes his current role as the vice president of engineering at BMW M Automobiles and BMW Individual at BMW M GmbH, Germany – a position he has held since 2008. Having joined BMW in 1983, Biermann (57) played a key part in honing the performance and dynamics of some of this marque's most acclaimed road and race cars. Biermann will start his new position on 1 April 2015 at the Hyundai Motor Group's Research & Development Centre in Namyang, Korea.

About his appointment, Biermann says, “I couldn't be more excited to join the Hyundai Motor Group. It is a company I have watched closely as it has taken on its key competitors and quickly established a strong customer base in Europe. 2015 is a key year for the brand with the launch of many all-new models and the start of its second season in WRC, so I am really looking forward to the challenge.”

Biermann’s appointment follows closely on the 2014 opening of a new European Test Centre at the Nürburgring in Germany, allowing the Hyundai Motor Company to test the reliability and driveability of its new vehicles more effectively and accurately.
